Last year I entered a Kentucky Derby hat contest on The Today Show where I had made an oversize paper rose hat. They called me up telling me that I was one of the 3 finalists, flew me to NYC, and on the show I won the contest. I even have a 3′ trophy to prove it! It was a pretty fun event. Now I’m here to show you how to make it. And it gets better… I used a Laura Ashley scarf to tie it together. The best of both worlds!
Materials: paper (mine was 19 x 24″), scissors, pencil, spray paint for a little flare, Laura Ashley scarf, glue gun and duct tape.
Step 1: Cut out 7 petals out of this lemon shape template. I used the whole sheet, but you can adjust it according to how large you’d like to make your hat.
Step 2: Roll the first petal and glue. This will be the center of the rose.
Step 3: Glue on edge of the next petal on one side of the center of the rose. Glue the other side of the petal to the other side of the center of the rose.
Step 4: Take the next petal and glue it on the opposite side of the petal. Repeat to the other side of the center.
Step 5: With the last 3 petals, add about 6″ of glue on the bottom of the petal and glue it around the base of the core flower.
Step 6: Your flower should be done. The last step is to add on your straps made from a Laura Ashley scarf by cutting the scarf in half down the center.
Step 7: Attach it to the center inside of the flower with duct tape.
It’s that easy!
