An Ode to Corduroy

ELRCordhero-940x632With November well and truly here and December fast approaching, it seems only suitable to make sure our outfits this time of year reflect the season. So step forward our Pintuck Detail Belted Cord Shirt Dress that not only looks like autumn but feels pretty autumnal too. Tasked with styling this seasonally appropriate dress, the lovely Rosie from Everything Looks Rosie shows us why corduroy needs to be featured in this season’s wardrobe…

“Swaddle me in corduroy and nurse me with split pea soup […] carve my smile into a thousand pumpkins. O autumn! O teakettle! O grace!” The words of author Rainbow Rowell really resonate at this time of year. Autumn is a season for cosy comforts: edible, homely and sartorial.

Autumn style for me starts with texture and colour. Rowell’s description of being swaddled in corduroy certainly sounds appealing as the days get darker and colder. Is there anything more comforting at this time of year than cosy seasonal fabrics? Corduroy, velvet, knitwear and faux fur not only provide warmth but are full of cosy memories for me. Corduroy has extra meaning – it was a key part of my childhood ensembles so carries a certain nostalgia.

The changing leaves and hedgerows inspire my seasonal palette as summer brights give way to evergreen and berry hues. Laura Ashley’s Pintuck Detail Belted Cord Shirt Dress ticked both colour and texture boxes: the rich red perfectly matches the autumnal landscape while the needle cord fabric makes it extremely cosy to boot.

The shirt dress is a timeless classic and the Peter Pan collar adds a retro-inspired feel. Tempting as it is to wear my faux fur Laura Ashley throw outside the house at this time of year, this dress makes autumn dressing something to relish.

My dress had its debut on a trip to our local farm where it coordinated with the colours of ruby red apples.

Pair with a winter coat to kept the chill winter wind at bay. Accessorized with my retro gondola basket I was ready for a morning’s apple picking; the loveliest of autumnal days I’ve had in some time. Share some of my favourite things about the season on Laura Ashley USA’s Instagram using the hashtag #myodetoautumn. I’d love it if you joined in!
